I want to thank the community around me for speaking into my life. We are called to overcome evil with good, and there is so much toxicity these days I am sticking with love. Let’s all keep our eyes focused on Jesus.
The day started out with a woman I have known for a long times sharing she will be moving into permanent housing. We are the “pastors of Uhaul” for many.
I loaded the van with one eye on the door waiting for a friend from 180 life church who had made all the sandwiches and said she would come to help. I had left my phone at home and Alissa at Uhaul let me use her phone to call my wife and pass along a message to her. This place gives us great favor.
I got downtown to Liz and a still-sober Charlie (praise God), Bernard and the usual mix of others (but no Ed). A couple of guys were walking past and were a hot mess and when I offered them water they helped unload and stayed for the entire service. As we gathered for the intro circle which included a man who was just headed to the library (an man of color who moved from Michigan, is an engineer and lives in West Hartford and saw what was happening and was drawn in my the community.
Suzan showed up with a hysterical story....
She had arrived at Uhaul and somehow made it to the back of storage and found of couple of guys with a white Uhaul van. She asked if the were loading up for Street Church and they said yes and she said she was there to help. They thanked he but she said they were ok but she helped anyway and she followed them to the highway but they got ahead her... “that was ok because I knew where to meet”. When she got to City Haul she was surprised to not see them. It turns out they must have been the Pentecostal Spanish Church we have seen down there that speaks little or no English! Only in this place!
We set up easily and there were so few folks. It was hot again and everyone was holed up in the library. We set up and Bernard took the first reading (surprise!), Al had the Second after he had his camera lady set up, Malaree took the third, and Chantel look the Gospel.
I preached using the model What does the passage reveal about the character and nature of God and us and is there a call to action. I began with the Isaiah passage... “come and drink and eat without cost” and set up that we have a God who sees, provides, offers freely and that this is contrasted with the nature of man. If God calls us to his provision, that means that man withholds from each other. The task is to rely on him for our needs and live with free and open hands.
I offered the invitation to come to Jesus and there was a pause then Daniel came forward asking for prayer, I asked about baptism and he said no. I simply said why not dedicate his life? What was holding him back? Ok, and we went to the fountain and all prayed over him. He then shared that he had stopped drinking four days ago and was tired of being sick and tired and the stout man began to weep and I baptized him and help him and whispered love into his ear. Then Kevin came forward and wanted to get right too, and then a third man came up wanting prayer for an inured elbow.
Even though I was “solo” the church did what she does and Malaree and Liz were on drinks, Brendan was handing out drinks to passersby, Mommie was on lunch along with the Jacobs, folks were talking with everyone. Ben and Rebecca handed out the sunglasses. While we were praying, and woman whom I have not met came to me saying her friend was about to pass out from not eating and to hurry up. I went to her friend who was in live and asked her if she was ok, appologizing for the heat and offering her a banana and set in the shade. She smiled broadly, she was stunningly beautiful compared to her rough looking female friend and said she was fine... and then was the first one in line for communion.
We were loading up when Eric’s friend whom we had baptized a two weeks ago pulled me aside and said he had been struggling and wanted to get clean from IV drugs. I had asked him if he needed to repent of anything when we baptized him and he had shared his addiction but did take the offer to get to rehab. I gave him the number the access line and he say down and called while Ben prayed over him. he said he couldn’t be completely honest with the intake because he had an active court case. The could not find him a bed and will have to call Monday. Pray he follows up. They can’t call him because he can only use his phone with WiFi.
I pulled into storage tired and will and a woman walked up to me as I pulled in... “Bryan” Will said, “I want to you meet somebody”... It was a long conversation but condensed she had demonic activity in her home and her cat had begun to attack her she had marks. She had contacted physics to curse her sisters husband and “it boomeranged” back on her and was being tormented. She was asking everybody and everything for help... her step-dad was Ukranian Orthdox and her mom was Thai and had brogought there to the Thai Temples so calling on all gods to manipulate life and nature was common for her. I treaded carefully knowing that I was speaking out denying the faith of her parents but she as desperate. “What can I do? I am confused and angry that I brought this on myself”. I asked if she had a Bible and told her to read the Book of Jonah t understand the mercy of God,, and then to read Philippians to grasp the jealous love of Jesus and told here to pray “Jesus, I did not know. I am desperate and need help. Please reveal yourself to me.
oh, and she and Will unloaded the van and a second employee came to help them then they all drank ice cold iced tea and laughed. Will took my keys and checked in the van for me.

We had a Holy and fun service at The Gables this past week. This entire facility is for memory care, but it is also the church that sings with the most gusto, shouts Amen, Hallelujah! The loudest, and all take communion together.
The Spirit of God is released when His people are hungry, and He knows how to feed his children whether they can call for food or not…
